It appears that the rich are on the verge of getting even richer this offseason, as free agent forward Shawn Marion was in Cleveland today for a visit with members of the Cavaliers brass.
Cleveland resident Joey Rosen first tweeted about the meeting when he accidentally stumbled upon the VIP get together at a bar in Ohio City.
The Cavs only have a minimum contract available to offer Marion, but the fact that he’s meeting with GM David Griffin and new head coach David Blatt shows that Marion is at least listening to the Cavs pitch. At 36 years old, Marion may be looking to compete for a title again rather than take more money elsewhere.
We have already seen the impact LeBron James can have on free agents, as Mike Miller left money on the table to play alongside James in Cleveland. Perhaps Marion will also be willing to forgo a slightly bigger payday elsewhere for a shot at a ring with the Cavs.
In the wake of Paul George’s gruesome leg injury, many people suggested that the Indiana Pacers would attempt to sign Marion to fill the void. It makes sense for Indiana, but the Cavs could essentially eliminate the Pacers as a threat by stealing Marion away and adding him to an already loaded roster.
Marion averaged 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Dallas Mavericks last season, and could be a valuable piece who is able to spell LeBron when he needs a break. The Miami Heat felt the impact of having no substitute for James down the stretch, and Cleveland knows that Marion fits their vision perfectly.
There has been a surprisingly small amount of interest in Marion’s services thus far during the offseason, but it appears as if that’s about to change. Keep an eye on Marion as the rumors continue to circulate, as he’s a veteran guy who brings experience and charisma to a young locker room.
Marion seems to be a great fit in Cleveland, and we’ll see shortly if he’s willing to take a smaller payday in exchange for a bigger shot at hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy.
